Reformation in Security Sectors Democracy Rules - 1105 Words
ââ¬Å"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time. (Churchill) The United States of America made a huge change for the entire world when they broke away from England and created their own new government. It was risky, but it was worth it. Since the U.S. became a country, we have been known for having one of the best government systems and for being a generally peaceful country. Without the reform being backed by a strong security sector and government, rebellion will likely start back up. These rebellions will not be stopped unless they have strong security to keep it all under control. This is how the issue started to begin with and it is a tragic way for a democracy to end. The Wedding (Junior Paper) Essay Example
The Wedding (Junior Paper) Essay Has an image of something that appeared to be real but in reality it was not there? Has the thought of judging someone came to mind, but that judgment was not true? Our society revolves around what people think about themselves and others. In the book, The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks, he develops the theme, appearance and reality, in variety of scenarios people could not image. Nicholas Sparks is one of the worldââ¬â¢s beloved storytellers (Sparks). He was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, and now he is currently living with his five children and wife, Catherine, in North Carolina (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠331). In 1985, he broke the school track record for the four by eight hundred relay in track in his freshmen year at Notre Dame and later on he was offered a full track scholarship (ââ¬ËNicholas Sparks Biographyâ⬠). He started trying out hand writing after he suffered from an injury that was in track. After he tried some different careers, he co-wrote a novel with Billy Mills Wokini named, A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding (ââ¬Å"Nicholas Sparksâ⬠). Later on while living in North Carolina, he wrote the novel, The Notebook, which garnered a widespread recognition for Sparks. Someone said, ââ¬Å"Nicholas Sparks follows up his beloved bestseller The Notebook with a touching novel about one manââ¬â¢s attempt to saving a failed marriageâ⬠(BookPage). His novel, Message in a Bottle, was inspired by the tragic death of his mother in 1989 in a horseback riding accident. Later on in 1996, his father died in a prematurely in a car accident. Sparkââ¬â¢s younger sister, Danielle, died of brain cancer, but before she died, he was inspired to write the novel, A Walk to Remember. The Wedding is about a man, Wilson Lewis, living in New Bern who forgot about his and his wife, Jane, 29th anniversary, and she became very upset with him. During the days, Wilson would think about their relationship how to get Jane to love him the way she did when they were younger. Every week, he would visit Janeââ¬â¢s dad, Noah married to Allie Calhoun from The Notebook (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠330), at the retirement center. When Wilson visits Noah, they talk about how everyone is doing and Wilson would ask Noah for some advice. Throughout the novel, Noah collapses and has heart attacks, but after staying in the hospital for a little while, his health goes back to normal. Reaching towards the climax, Jane and Wilsonââ¬â¢s oldest daughter, Anna, stops by the house and announces that she is getting married (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠330), but the only day she can get married is on her parentââ¬â¢s 30th anniversary. After Wilson and Jane agreed to the marriage, Anna and Jane had one week to plan the weeding and Anna let her mother choose all the decorations and items for the wedding. On the day of the wedding, everything was setup perfectly, but when Jane saw Anna not wearing the wedding dress, she was confused. So Anna told her that the wedding was not for her, it was for Jane. The first scenario of appearance and reality in The Wedding is Noah and Allieââ¬â¢s mythic relationship (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠337). About a month after Allie had died, Noah would sit at his desk rereading the letters that he and Allie had written to each other over the years or going through Leaves of Grass. When Wilson finally got Noah out of his room, they went to the pond in the morning. Wilson, brought Noah to the bench, and that morning was the first time they saw the swan (Sparks 153). The swan towards them, and Noah thought that they should have brought some bread with them so they could feed that swan. The next time Wilson came back to visit Noah, he was not in his room; instead, he was at the pond. He seemed to have become fond of the swan and somehow became friends with the swan. When Wilson would approach the swan and Noah, the swan would be staring at him and showed him no fear at all. Noah would always be at the pond feeding the swan Wonder Bread on a daily basis in all kinds of weather. He has sat in the rain, cold breeze and burning heat, and as the years go by, he would be spending more and more time every day on the bench. He would just stare and start talking to the swan. After a few months, Wilson asked Noah why he came to the pond so often. Noah replied back saying that the reason why he comes to the pond is because she wants him to. When Noah says ââ¬Å"sheâ⬠, he is referring to the swan and thinks that the swan is Allie (Sparks 154). ââ¬Å"Allie,â⬠he repeated. ââ¬Å"She has found a way to come back to me, just like she promised she would. All I had to do was find her,â⬠Noah explained (Sparks 155). Noah believes that the swan is Allieââ¬â¢s reincarnation. Wilson had no idea what to say to Noahââ¬â¢s explanation, and he was confused and startled when he heard Noah say that. The doctors, for example, doctor Barnwell and children are starting to think that Noah was delusional (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠337). Another scenario that Sparks develops appearance and reality is the rose garden. Noahââ¬â¢s present to Allie of a rose garden in the shape of five concentric hearts is an expression of ideal and true love, the work of a true romantic (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠337). The rose garden started off when Allie was first pregnant with Jane, because while she was pregnant, she became sick. Noah thought that the sickness would go away after the first couple of weeks, but it became worse. She barely got out of bed and become even more miserable by the day, so Noah wanted to give her something pretty to look at from her window. He thought that the heart by itself looked kind of boring and plain, and thought about planting bushes around the heart, but he kept procrastinating on it. Noah told Wilson that in the beginning of this process there was only one heart, not five hearts, because he did not plan on it. Soon after, she became pregnant again, and by that time Noah finally tried to plant the bushes. Allie thought that the reason why he made the concrete hearts was because they were having a baby. She said that it was the sweetest gift that he has ever done for her (Sparks 201). Since Allie said that, he could not exactly stop making concrete hearts. The first time he made the concrete heart; it was a romantic gesture for her, but by the last concrete heart that he made, he felt that it was more of a chore for him. He had to plant roses, and that made it harder for him. He had to keep cutting the roses, so that they can form perfectly. Later on, Allieââ¬â¢s feelings changed for the concrete hearts, because she asked Noah to plow the whole garden under the ground. The reality is that the rose garden was five separate gifts, one heart for each child that was born. The rose garden always held certain sadness for Allie because one of their youngest children, John, had died of meningitis at the age of four. Noah said, ââ¬Å"As much as she loved the garden, she said it was too painful to look at. Whenever she looked out the window, sheââ¬â¢d start crying and felt melancholy, and sometimes it seemed like sheââ¬â¢d never stopâ⬠(Sparks 202). Loosing John almost killed her and Noah. After Johnââ¬â¢s funeral, she could not eat or sleep, and when she was not in tears, she would wander around in a daze look (Sparks 203). When Allie looks at the garden, she thinks about Noahââ¬â¢s love and the death of their beloved child, John. As the family viewed the monument to love, it also became a tragic loss in reality. The final scenario that devolved the theme, appearance and reality, is the wedding from the climax to resolution. When Anna and Keith, her boyfriend, asked her parents if she could get married, Jane certainly thought it was going Annaââ¬â¢s wedding. The truth was that it was not Annaââ¬â¢s wedding because it was actually a wedding for Jane that Wilson should have given Jane a long time ago. It was part of Wilsonââ¬â¢s plan all along. He planned this event for about a year. Anna and Jane went to all sorts of stores and shop looking for items, decorations, the perfect wedding dress, and gowns for the bridesmaids. When everything appeared to be Annaââ¬â¢s indecisiveness over wedding details, the reality was that it was Annaââ¬â¢s plan for Jane to pick out what she wanted. Wilson came up with idea of having the wedding at Noahââ¬â¢s house in the garden. He hired plenty of workers to help him tender the garden, and clean the inside and outside of Noahââ¬â¢s house in a couple of days. During the preparations for the wedding, Jane had thought that getting the best photographers, musicians, and caterers was just a coincidence that they had cancellations the exact weekend of the wedding, but truth be told that it was a part of Wilsonââ¬â¢s plan to make Jane surprised on getting her dream wedding, since when Wilson and Jane first got married, then were married in the court house. When Jane saw Anna not wearing her wedding dress, she was terribly confused (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠337). After Anna said, ââ¬Å"This was never my wedding, Mom. Itââ¬â¢s always been your weddingâ⬠(Sparks 266). Jane was breathless with wonder and disbelief (Sparks 267). Even though Jane was still astonished on what just happed, the wedding had to go on. Wilson and Joseph ran to the front next to the minister, Harvey Wellington, and Jane got ready to walk down the aisle with Noah. When the time came, Wilson got the rings from Joseph. They renewed their vows that they spoke of long ago (Sparks 270). Our society revolves around what people think about themselves and the others. No one should always believe what others say just because it appears that way. Nicholas Sparks got most of his inspiration for his writing from his family hardships (ââ¬Å"Wedding, Theâ⬠331). In The Wedding, Sparks develops appearance and reality as the theme in variety of scenarios. Someone says, ââ¬Å"Sparkââ¬â¢s fans have from the very beginning eagerly anticipated a sequel to the romantic tale of Allie and Noah Calhoun. The wait is now overâ⬠¦Sparks tells his sweet storyâ⬠¦[with] a gasp-inducting twist at the very end. Satisfied female readers will close the covers with a sighâ⬠(Publishers Weekly). Despite that in the beginning, Wilsonââ¬â¢s marriage was going downhill and was unable to express his love to Jane. He spent so much time in his or office. His wife could leave him and his daughter is about to get married, but he knew that he had to stop it. His love for Jane grew over the years, and he tried everything he could do so that he could save their marriage. With the inspiration from the memories of Noah and Allieââ¬â¢s life spent together to guide him, he was devoted to find a resolution for his wife, Jane, to fall in love with him all over again. In the end, he found a perfect resolution to get their love back together (Sparks). An individual said, ââ¬Å"Sure to leave you breathlessâ⬠¦In this stunning follow-up to The Notebook,à readers new and old will remember the joy of falling in love and the challenge of staying in loveâ⬠(RoundTableReviews. om). Romeo And Juliet Essays (821 words) - English-language Films
Romeo And Juliet Essays (821 words) - English-language Films Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet, is a story of two young lovers, whose love was destined for destruction. They did not imagine that their love would lead to the tragedies that it did. These two young people did nothing wrong except fall in love. Three aspects of their destruction included the feud between the two families, the nurse and her betrayal of Juliet and the most important aspect of all is fate. The feud between the two families was one factor that contributed to the love of Romeo and Juliet being destined for destruction. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. (Romeo & Juliet, Prologue, pg.2 l.3) The two families, Montagues and Capulets, had many problems. There was hate between the two families so much so that even the servants hated each other. This feud would have caused many problems for Romeo and Juliet: These two young lovers knew this and this is why they kept their marriage a secret. If their parents discovered their secret, they would have made their childrens lives miserable. Romeo and Juliet would not have been able to see each other. Both of these families were very stubborn and there was hardly any thing that would have made them become friends. In the prologue we learn that the only way the strife could be ended was by the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Doth with their death bury their parents strife. (Romeo & Juliet, Prologue, l.8) Neither the Montagues or the Capulets would have accepted the marriage. Keeping the marriage a secret caused Romeo and Juliet to turn to other people for help. Sometimes these people gave them the wrong advice or just betrayed them. The Nurse was one of these characters who betrayed the young couple. The Nurse who was also Juliets friend turned against her at a very crucial time. The Nurse told Juliet that it would be best if she married Paris. I think it best you married with the county. (Romeo & Juliet, pg.101, III, v, l.219) This betrayal by the Nurse left Juliet alone. She was a wise young woman but it still would have been beneficial for her to have the help of the Nurse. Juliet was left on her own to make some very important decisions. I believe that if the Nurse had been around to help Juliet things may have turned out differently. Juliet had no one to turn to and ask for help. She could not have gone to her parents because they would not have understood. The Nurse was supposed to be one of Juliets best friends. Now when it was important for Juliet to have someone there, for her she was betrayed. When considering the destruction of Romeo and Juliet the most sifnificant fact you must think about is fate. Fate, above all, destroyed Romeo and Juliet. Many instances in the play reveals that the love of Romeo and Juliet would end in death. A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life. (Romeo & Juliet,pg.2, Prologue, l.6) From the very beginning it is evident that they were destined by the stars to bad fortune. Some people may think that there is no way to control fate or change what is in the stars. It could be that the love of Romeo and Juliet was destined for death so that their parents feud would be over. Also, in the prologue it states that the dreadful course of their love was destined for death. The fearful passage of their death marked love. (Romeo & Juliet, pg.2, Prologue, l.9) Both of these quotes show us that the love of these two was destined to end tragically. The masquerade party was above all the most important aspect of fate. The fact that Romeo was wearing a mask and his face was hidden allowed juliet to fall in love with him before she saw who it was. If Juliet had known who Romeo was she would probably have not fallen in love with him. Fate could not have been changed whatever was meant to be would happen and no one could change that. In conclusion, from the very beginning, the love of Romeo and Juliet was destined to be

The art of this book comes with Elsaââ¬â¢s coronation in the first chapter of the book. The book has different graphic designs and styles. Tones of art are packed well with the book having few character designs. The characters have complex costume designs which actually raise the graphics of the book. The second chapter called the wilderness brings to the reader a scene in the forest. There is a development of an art of different kinds of trees and how snow looks on them. There is again the art of Ann going through the forest to look for Elsa. There is also the graphics brought by the landscape of this scene. A Theory of Justice Presented by John Rawls Essay -- inequalities, f
In A Theory of Justice John Rawls presents his argument for justice and inequality. Rawls theorizes that in the original position, a hypothetical state where people reason without bias, they would agree to live in a society based on two principles of justice (Rawls 1971, 4). These two principles of justice are named the first and second principles. The first is the equal rights and liberties principle. The second is a combination of the difference principle and the fair equality of opportunity principle, or FEOP (Rawls 1971, 53). Rawls argues that inequality will always be inevitable in any society (Rawls 1971, 7). For example, there will always be a varied distribution of social and economic advantages. Some people will be wealthier than others and some will hold places of greater importance in society. Rawlsââ¬â¢s argument is that to ensure the stability of society the two principles of justice are needed to govern the assignment of rights and regulate the inequality (Rawls 1971 , 53). Any infringement of an individuals rights or inequality outside the parameters of the principles of justice are unjust. In order to understand Rawls, one has to understand the theoretical concept of the original position. It lays the groundwork for Rawlsââ¬â¢s argument by providing a foundation for society. Calling it a state where people reason without bias is a very general definition that does not at all fully explain all of the different aspects of the original position. The original position, according to Rawls, has to do with a social contract (Rawls 1971, 11). People agree to rules in society that are pursuant to their own general well being. However, they decide on these rules behind what Rawls calls a veil of ignorance. Behind this veil of ignor... ... his principles of justice to evaluate such an inequality. If rights were not being infringed then he would immediately move on to the second principle criteria. In this scenario, if the workers were getting the greatest benefit then the inequality presented would be justified. For example, if the corporation were putting the increased profits into safer equipment for its workers, or providing insurance, compensation, etc. then it could be said that the inequality is justified. However, if the corporation were keeping itââ¬â¢s profits then the workers are least advantaged, but not getting the greatest benefit, so the inequality would be unjust in Rawls eyes. Allowing the inequality to continue would lead to instability in society and it would violate Rawlsââ¬â¢s principles. ââ¬Æ' Works Cited Rawls, John. A Theory of Justice. Music Piracy Is a Good Thing Essay
If pirating music hurts musicians income so badly it would show, and after all this time of pirating music it hasnââ¬â¢t. Music piracy benefits artists more than it hurts, therefore it should be legal. Music piracy is mostly committed by people who are everyday people who have average income jobs and have families who end up being sued by big record companies over downloading music for free. It seems a bit to greedy when you look at the difference in pay between the artist and the people who download the songs. ( â⬠¦) say that the people who pirate the music are more likely to go to the show and buy the albums after downloading music (Ernesto). Also, people who pirate music tracks are very likely to develop an connection to the bands orartists and that will lead to them attending the shows, buying albums and merchandise. When putting this issue in perspective, record companies are just looking for money without any consideration for the ways of getting it. Record companies start suing people who have downloaded music for ridiculous amount of money in attempt to intimidate and scare off the fellons from downloading music illegally. The main groups affected are college kids that donââ¬â¢t have the money. Sarah Barg was a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Sarah received an email from a label company stating that she owed $3,000 to the Recording Industry Association of America (Bratton). For that amount,, Sarah would be paying $7. 87 for each song. Majority of the songs she pirated were from the eighties and werenââ¬â¢t even relevant anymore, and yet she was battling record companyââ¬â¢s in court over them them. Sixty students like Sarah at UNL received the same similar, as well as hundreds sent out to over sixty other universities across the country. Not knowing ow else to handle the situation, Barg contacted her parents and they had to cover her settlement. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know what I would have done. Iââ¬â¢m only 20 years old,â⬠says Barg. Well over five hundred students across the states have paid settlements to avoid being sued. ââ¬Å"I see it as bullying,â⬠UNL freshman Andrew Johnson says, ââ¬Å"Legally, it makes sense, because we donâ⠬â¢t have the money to fight back. â⬠Johnson illegally downloaded one song and settled $3,000 to avoid being sued for one song. The money used came from the 18 year oldââ¬â¢s college fund and he now has to work two jobs to compensate for his losses. The record companies seem to target those canââ¬â¢t fight back. In 2007, major record companies such as Warner music groups, Warner Bros Records, Inc. , and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, tried to sue a young girl from Texas named Whitney Harper for illegally downloading music from file sharing networks on the internet (Malisow). Whitney was at the time was sixteen years old and was being sued for a minimum of $750 per song when Whitney downloaded thirtyseven songs. That is a little over $20,000 and she is only sixteen years old. Harper tried to use the Innocent Infringer Act that would reduce fees to $200 per song. In order to accomplish that, Harper had to prove she was unaware of the copyright laws by claiming that the copyright notice placed on cds were not on the file sharing networks on the Internet therefore she was unaware. The companies referred to the sixteen-year-old as a ââ¬Å"long term massive infringerâ⬠of copyright laws. Harper warned that if the companies won the case that downloading music off the Internet could never be innocent infringement. The Harper case is one the few after many years still going through federal court. The companies had stated they were going to begin transitioning away from suing individuals and find better means of fixing the issue. After years of record companies using an intimidation method to fix the pirating problem, it got them nowhere because the amount of pirates only went up, and the efforts by the companies were in most cases useless. According to the Wall Street Journal, they attempted suing many single mothers, a thirteen-year-old girl, and a dead peope. The new approach is for the companies to work with Internet service providers and when music is eing pirated the user receives a warning that they will lose Internet service if they continue(WSJ. com). The companies still reserve the right to sue if someone is a heavy violator or has ignored several warnings, but even with this new system, it still seems like the companies are only out for money, but in an attempt to escape negative attention from the media, they change their approach. According to The Independent, peo ple who illegally download music also spend more money on music, concerts, merchandises than anyone else. The Secretary of State for Business, Peter Mandelson, stated that the record companies new approach to crack down on illegal down loaders by cutting off internet service could potentially harm the music industry more than help it. ââ¬Å"The people who file share are the ones who are interested in music. They use file sharing as a discovery mechanism. â⬠The artists also have mixed opinions over file sharing, some such as James Blunt and Lily Allen are anti-piracy and Shakira is pro-piracy(Shields). Sites have come out with monthly bills for unlimited music plans that seem fairer. Some artists donââ¬â¢t feel affected by file sharing and support the fact that piracy creates a bigger fan base for them. Bands like Angels and Airwaves have produced free records so copyright wasnââ¬â¢t an issue. They figure that the fans will still come see them play and record sales arenââ¬â¢t the only thing to being in a successful band. Some artists donââ¬â¢t seem to realize that. Most artists make plenty off of record sales even with a piracy problem, so court cases and law suits on everyday people by record companies seems a bit greedy and selfish. Even with the new laws, they are still pushing to stop this unstoppable problem. Today music piracy is referred to as a dead issue. Most cases that are still pending are being dropped. This year a $54,000 fine on a single mother of four was dropped by the U. S. District Court Judge, Micheal Davis, who stated piracy is ââ¬Å"no longer monstrous and shocking. The need for deterrence cannot justify a two million verdict for stealing and distributing twenty-four songs for the sole purpose of obtaining free musicâ⬠(physorg. om). Thomas Rasset was convicted in 2007 and was ordered to pay $220,000, but the judge who presided over the trial called off the verdict, saying it was ââ¬Å"wholly disproportionate and oppressive. â⬠Her case was one of the thousands that had actually made it to court. In 2011, with new laws, these cases should not be forgotten about. The people who lost cases should be compensated and apologized to because they did nothing other than have an interest in the artist.

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Essay
Title Assignment topic 1) What are your preferred definitions of business ethics and social responsibility Why have you chosen these definitions 2) What is one key issue in the area of business ethics and social responsibility that is relevant, currently, to your organisation and your industry (You need to explain the issue and show its relevance to your organisation/industry) 3) What strategies could your organisation adopt to address this issue (You need to explain these fully) Word count Words Executive Summary There have been drastic changes today that have and continue to influence business ethics. However, organizations are lagging behind these changes or simply ignoring business ethics all together. Recent companies have failed to practice business ethics and social responsibility as their primary aim remains on making profits. The issue is that in fact, management have been blindsided by their need to make monies under whatever circumstances necessary which usually constitut es for foregoing ethical practices. The most credible of organisations and employees have indeed professional integrity and have been reliant on a code of ethics for the organizations principles and standards of practice. The plight of society continues to surround business ethics and corporate social responsibility which is yet to surface most organisations. The subject of Business Ethics and Social Responsibility introduces current issues experienced in organizations and provides guided analysis to enable a better understanding and appreciation of these issues. Illustrations of consequent economic costs having failed to practice ethical behaviors and social responsibility by the organization and individuals within have been provided also. Presented in this paper, with the aid of an example organization- Marpol Distribution Limited a family owned and operated Hardware and Auto supplies wholesale distribution company, are a wide array of ethical issues recognized within its business activities with proposed solutions in order to address the aforementioned issues. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introductionâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦3 2. Defining Business Ethics and Social Responsibilityâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.4 3. A lack of business ethics and social responsibility at Marpol Distribution Limited â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦5 4. Addressing the issues of Marpol Distribut ion Limitedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦7 5. Conclusion â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦10 6. References â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.12 7. Appendixâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.13 1.Introduction The relevance and necessity to which business ethics and social responsibility hold within anyà organisation is inordinate compared to the practices of most organisations presently. Therefore, the wellbeing of society and todays business world is at stake since it lies in the hands of business leaders who fail to exercise ethical procedures. The confidence in business operations once held by customers have been drastically shaken due to the collapses and corporate scandals surrounding some of the most pioneering and respected companies such as Arthur Andersen, WorldCom, Tyco and the most famous Enron Hence the urgency and necessity for the incorporation of ethics and social responsibility in business decision-making and strategic planning is heightened together with the compulsory provision of pertinent education to forthcoming business leaders in order to operate a sustainable and protected organisation. I believe that business ethics goes beyond the laws and legality, instead it teaches positive attributes such as respect, honesty, politeness which should be adopted into business practices (Inc.com, 1996). Furthermore, Ghillyer suggests in his book Business Ethics Now that there is a choice guidance for persons by ways of either moral standards or the moral compass of others in determining suitable behaviour which has influences stemming from cultural backgrounds or traditions to the norms of the environment in which we are positioned (2012). On the other hand, the social responsibility of a company deals with the management of its business processes so that a holistic positive impact on stakeholders and society is fashioned (Mallenbaker.net, 2004). The social responsibility of a company is often associated with the triple bottom line profit, people, and planet which can be theorized as the stewardship of the economy, society and the environment are at the organizations concentration (Zipcon.net, 1953 Elkington, 1998). This paper aims to satisfy the requirements of firstly defining business ethic and social responsibility. Subsequently, unethical issues encountered in Marpol Distributions Ltd will be identified and addressed. 2.Defining Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Business ethics refers to the underlying framework for carrying on business by adhering to generally accepted standards of right behaviour (highered.mcgraw-hill.com n.d.).It involves discernment of right, good and propriety from wrong, evil and propriety thereafter taking actions accordingly to the choice made. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development in its publication Making Good Business Sensedefined Socialà Responsibility as the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large (Holme and Watts 2000) it focuses on the quality of their management regarding both processes and persons alongside the nature and extent of impacts on society. Although the terms social responsibility and ethics are used interchangeably, meanings differ. Business ethics relates to an individuals or a work groups decisions that society evaluates as right or wrong, whereas social responsibility is a broader concept that concerns the impact of the entire businesss activities on society (highered.mcgraw-hill.com n.d.). These definitions were chosen mainly because, they added to the scope of business ethical behaviour and societal responsibility, it brings clarity to the concept of values and morals and overall contribution to society as individuals and businesses. Ethical standards helps to the shape both the internal and external construct of any organization .Companies that rely on ethical standards which includes values and morals rely less on legislation from central or state government . The belief that business ethics is an essential element in any organization influences the companys impact towards its social responsibility. Organizations involved in the wholesale supply of goods and raw materials, such as Marpol Distribution Limited should strive to maintain or incorporate the necessary values and morals to aid in its decision making process . According to Hartman (2005,p2), who made the suggestion that ethics involves judgments as to good and bad, right and wrong, and what ought to be. Thi s therefore will have a major impact in the dynamics of the organization. 3.A lack of business ethics and social responsibility at Marpol Distribution Limited With intentions of implementing ethical practices into the business procedures, one must firstly understand business ethics which requires the identification of ethical issues within the organization. Ethical issues are identifiable problems, situations, or opportunities that requires a person to choose from among several actions that may be evaluated as right or wrong, ethical or unethical (highered.mcgraw-hill.com n.d.). In most cases this usually implicates much deliberation between choosing monetary gain over conducting oneself fittingly. Considering the business activities of Marpol Distributionà Limited we can diagnose ethical disputes that they have encountered. As previously mentioned this organization is typically family-managed and operated with its traditional methods of approach immutable. While remaining old-fashioned might work in favour of some companies, it has had the reverse effect on Marpol Distribution Limited. Quality assurance is a major facet in the operations of Marpol Distribution as the expectations of customers of this supply company is quite high together with responsibilities to societal contribution and development. The issue arises therefore, when a lack of standard up brings in relations of values and morals are recognised. Values tend to be seen as end goals sought by individual and vary from person to person based on their desires for profit, law, virtue or charity (See Appendix). Morals tend to be seen as rules or duties that govern behaviour in our personal interactions they are our personal guiding principles (Optimal.org 1997). Generally, ethics can be seen to be the same for people within the same culture (Hartman, 2005, p2). Companies like Marpol Distribution Limited, led by its vision statement to ensure profit and continuous growth has had negative impact of ethical behaviour. This therefore has resulted in a loss of customer supplier relationship and indirectly affected its profit margin The consequences of unethical behaviour and unethical business institutions are too serious to be ignored (Des Jardins, p. 3). As suggested by Des Jardins, business ethics are simply too serious for Marpol Distribution to ignore. Corporate Governance or the lack thereof has certainly contributed negatively to the current situation of Marpol Distribution Limited. This is demonstrated as this profit driven organisation fails to emulate the necessary attributes to generate good governance such as responsiveness values of fairness, accountability, responsibility and transparency emphasis on non-monetary aspects of operatio ns etc. (Unescap.org 2013). This is also extended to unethical leadership which constitutes employee insolence as it has been suggested that employees emulate the behaviours of those above them based on their perception of ethics observed (Davis 2004). In addition, the company has become loyal to its family-run business style and as a result the recruitment process that exists within this company has failed them seeing as the workforce comprises of unskilled and unqualified family members who have prevailed over a more appropriate workforce.

Heritage Tourism and its Peculiarities
Heritage Tourism and its Peculiarities Introduction Heritage tourism focuses on information and how the management contributes to the promotion of that particular tourism site. To this end, it assesses the strategic locations of the site and the importance of achieving the intended goal, which aims towards the revenue generation and culture preservation.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Heritage Tourism and its Peculiarities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The employed methodology included personal interviews of the site administrators. Mr. Ivan Mercieca, the maintenance manager of three heritage sites in Rabat was the first one to be interviewed. The second interview was directed to Mr. David Cardona, the curator of three heritage sites. Moreover, the study employed different reports and journals to ascertain issues on the management of various heritage sites. St. Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs (SPC) About Heritage Malta Heritage Malta was established in 2002 under the Cultural Heritage Act. This agency is concerned with the sites preservation and direct management to preserve the Malta peopleââ¬â¢s culture. The management of this site is focused on four broad categories. These categories are conservation, management, marketing and interpretation. In 2005, after the amendment of the law creating a heritage agency, all the activities related to culture and heritage preservation were given to this organisation (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p. 76). As a result, 64, 000 and 100, 000 tourists were realized in 2008 and 2009 respectively (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.6). About St. Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs St. Paul Catacombs are found in Rabat, Malta. They a significant part of a large cemetery field that is located in Malta. The cemeteries have graves of different religious backgrounds such as the Pagans, the Jews and even Christians. It was estimated that more than 25 of these people were dug in this site (Goh 2010, p.1). Accor ding to archaeological evidence, St. Paul has diverse religious background, because people from different faiths buried there. Some of the unique features include the circular tables, which are set in a specific manner that seems to show a couch. These are believed to have been used for meals during the old times. Core resources The core resources include catacombs, collection, information panels in the reception area, human/financial resources to offer transport facility/services, media, and small displays. Heritage visitor attraction (HVA) was developed into a museum by constituting information panels in 2004, especially after clearing the debris from the site. The historical value of SPC is evident from the St Paulââ¬â¢s shipwreck. In addition, there are glass paintings of St John.Advertising Looking for report on communications media? These included SPC Malta-catacombs (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.7). The project incorporated the construction of the Tarxien temples, Ggantija Heritage Park and St. Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.8). The work involved topographical survey, archaeological investigations, mapping, hydrological survey, environmental assessment, and structural survey (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.9). Products Tangible products St Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs are a big complex with different attractions. There is only one guided tour scheduled for 1 p.m. The guided tour involves several groups. In addition, there are audio guided tours. These are usually six in number. In this regard, Kotlerââ¬â¢s diagram/theory can be used in analysing SPC situation, as shown below (Kotler 1997, p.112). Fig1.0: Kotlerââ¬â¢s Diagram Product Through improved information t echnology, SPC has provided a means of delivering new and unique products, which are intended to match many other available products. Place SPC can create a new interaction place for their tourists/clients so that the communication between them could be cordial, easy and with maximum efficiency (Kotler 1997, p.114).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Heritage Tourism and its Peculiarities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Price Pricing of products that SPC intends to supply is very significant in determining the overall sales volume. Promotion Carrying out promotion is one of the means through which SPC can create consumer awareness (Kotler 1997, p.113). Augmented products Group visits are arranged to tour St Paul Catacombs, and they are accompanied by a licensed tour guide. There are gift shops selling some products. Moreover, the transport systems at St Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs have walkways for both the normal people and the physically handicapped. A Heritage trail evening tour involves visits, which are organised under different themes. Under the same concept, the following can also be studied. People In this scenario, tourists are the most important aspect of the marketing mix, an issue that the SPC needs to recognise. For instance, the use of online tourism is capable of changing the dynamics on product/service delivery of the site. Process The issues relating to the process involve the channel through which SPC follows in delivering its products to customers. It also outlines the various ways through which the customer should follow to receive the products (Kotler 1997, p.114). Stakeholders Heritage Malta (HM) Heritage Malta plays important roles such as management, conservation, interpretation and marketing (Garrold, Fyall, Leask Reid 2012, p. 1162). Besides, it maintains the cultural heritage of the sites. Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) is a coordinator between itself and the population. It is responsible for conducting meetings regarding the sitesââ¬â¢ promotion and to implement the culture preservation activities. They also have informative journals, which add crucial knowledge/ value to the sites (Visit Britain 2010, p.1). To this end, MICE scheme is held after the ERDF is finalised, and then the former is made available in SPC.Advertising Looking for report on communications media? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Tour Operators, MICE Section, Language Proper coordination between tourist operators and the Tourism Authority is also important, because it increases the number of visitors expected (Timothy Nyaupane 2009, p. 39).The tourist operators also act as advertisers for the attraction (Visit Scotland 2010, p.1). Visitors St. Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs are visited by tourists that belong to different countries and cultures. These normally range from local to international visitors. Tourists who visited St Paulââ¬â¢s Catacombs were 71,380 and 71,461 in 2009 and 2008 respectively (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.86). For instance, sometimes school students visit the sites for educational purposes. The number of visitors stood at 1,043,643 and 1,068,420 in 2009 and 2008, respectively (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.86). Local Council and Neighbours The local council and neighbours were consulted to voice their opinions on services such as electricity and drainage. As a result, an a nnual event took place, Rabat Arts Festival. Focusing on the ERDF programme, the local council was meant to issue permits for holding events and work. The ERDF programme would analyse the effects on the community concerned. As part of the ERDF programmeââ¬â¢s goal of increasing accessibility systems, St. Agatha Schoolââ¬â¢s environmental censor/football ground would be used to access the catacombs. Media As part of the marketing and advertising programme, Heritage Malta uses its website for sales and promotional campaigns. Social media such as facebook, you tube and twitters are used as links for attracting tourists. These links also facilitate online shopping (Leask Yeomann 1999, p. 63). The website incorporates various information kiosks, panels in the museum, information guides, audio guides, and interactive CD, which are important media for online sales/marketing. Outsourcing Outsourcing is used to make sure that the services are delivered in a prompt and timely manner (K oetler 1997, p. 34). One of the areas where Heritage Malta has engaged outsourcing is cleaning. There is an outsource contract whereby cleaning is done for two and a half hours every day (Garrold et al. 2012, p. 1162). Heritage Malta has also engaged Keeron contractor to deal with security issues. The other advisory bodies are the Maltese Commission for UNESCO and the Scientific Committee for the Megalithic Temples (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.10). Indeed, it is important to increase enough surveillance for the sites (Hall McArthur 1996, p. 103). This implies that the EU funds can be sought under the ERDF programme to finance such project management costs. Key Management issues at SPC Lack of revenue Inadequate revenue is a challenge to the Heritage Malta attraction. Revenue is generated from admission fees, hiring, donations, and interactive CD. The collected revenue is apportioned among the marketing, media, experts, maintenance. Part of this amount is used for financing employee benefit expenses. For instance, 5,271,789 and 6,621,654 pounds for employee benefit expenses were incurred in 2009 and 2008, respectively (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.24). Other expenses include bank interests amounting to â⠬1,715 for 2009 and â⠬6,819 for 2008 (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.25). Moreover, the directorââ¬â¢s fees amounted â⠬13,974 for 2009 and â⠬37,645 for 2008 (Heritage Malta Annual Report 2009, p.25). Therefore, it is evident that more revenues are allocated to expenses, thus putting the Heritage Malta in a financial distress. Conservation of Site Even though there are different modes of preservation used by the Malta Heritage, more needs to be done. The site receives a lot of visitors annually. This means that the large number of visitors increases the pressure on the soil and consequently it is deteriorated. Another issue that arises when it comes to conservation is the colliding values of the people who are involv ed. The best illustration of this is the fact that people of different religious backgrounds have been buried on that site; this includes the Christians, the Pagans as well as the Jews. Security Issues Security still remains a challenge, and partly the reason for this is the huge number of tourists that usually visit the place. The first security threat is posed due to the fact that some people normally go downstairs and even beyond the barriers. The next threat is derived from the fact that the wall that seeks to separate the school premises from being accessed by the tourists is not that effective. The security threat is further heightened by the fact that there arenââ¬â¢t any security or surveillance cameras within the attraction (Che Chen 2010, p. 33). This has opened doors to vandalism and other security issues. The number of security personnel mandated to do physical check does not match the perimeters and this makes some areas remain uncovered by these security personnel. Health and Safety The safety of the visitors at St. Paul Catacombs is not fully assured. This challenge is further heightened by the fact that the number of visitors has always been high (Falk Dierking 1992, p. 102). Since the number of visitors is high, it means that tour guides are not enough. Consequently, people have to guide themselves throughout the Catacombs. For first time visitors there is always a challenge of having proper mobility and balance while passing through the St. Paul Catacombs. This has the effect of putting people at risk (Fyall et al. 2008, p. 112). Another challenge is posed by the poor drainage systems that are not properly installed and they pass from surfaces, from the roofs without any proper installation. The delay in fixing the drainage system is caused by more bureaucracies in the government (Leask 2010, p. 54). Traffic Congestion The narrow roads cannot accommodate the large number of visitors. As a result, there is a huge traffic on these roads. T here are also some business premises which contribute to the narrowing of the road. A good example of such premises includes the grocery shops that are located just besides the road. These are normally supplied by vans. When these supply vans are transacting, they block the roads and cause traffic jams. Effective Management Tools Effective management as a process can be split up into three stages: the determining factors, measuring the effectiveness and finally establishing the effective management tools (Leask Rhiova 2010, p. 123). In Heritage Malta some of the determining factors include the ownership category. The type of ownership is inclined towards communal. The people of Malta tend to believe that through the site their culture is preserved. This leads to another determining factor which is the individual nature of the resource. In this case, the community members take an individual approach of ownership and equal levels are put in place to ensure that the culture is actuall y preserved (Leiper 1990, p. 380). In order to ensure proper and efficient management the following tools may be added: The use of Multimedia Technology in communicating with the visitors as well as monitoring the same is one of the core surveillance methods that should be employed (Pearce 2005, p. 76). Employing the use of an interactive Multimedia Technology will be very helpful to the visitors. This is because it will make it easier for them to gain access to some important features such as directions. This is important as it will also reduce the cost of hiring staff (MacCannell 1999, p. 45). Touch screens with info on them are also very attractive and will make many people use it. Guided tours are also important to facilitate the management process (Moore 1994). This is because the tour guides know well the terrain of the site. With their help the safety of the visitors increases. Another element that is helpful when it comes to the use of guided tours is the fact that the visit ors will have a chance to learn much more about the place. This is because the tour guides are fully aware of the history and the heritage of the site. Guided tours are also interactive and can be a very efficient method of collecting feedback from the visitors. Through this method the management can easily learn how to improve on their management as well as their service delivery. Groups with licensed guides from the MTA are also important when it comes to management in St. Pauls Catacombs. Groups help in coordination while with the licensed tour guide; such groups make it easier to maneuver through the site. Printed word storyboards as well as information boards are also an important way to convey messages to the visitors (Smith 2003, p. 88). The importance of this mode of conveying the message is that they are normally placed at very open places and many visitors get the chance to read them (Shackley 1998, p. 134). Apart from that, such printings can be done in a different langu age in order to be read by people from different backgrounds. Pictures and illustrations can be read by different people from different languages. Brochures are only kept on-site. Before brochures were presented on tourist information stands and other HM sites and museums, it was found that they were useless and this resulted in waste of money. Alternatively, such brochures can be availed to the interested customers at a fee. This fee shall be used to cover the cost of production. Gastronomy is important in developing the cultural aspect of the Malta. Websites such as ilovefood.com is dedicated to developing the cuisine of the Maltese people. Other interpretation tools can also be employed to enhance management. These could take the form of video and audio guidance machine. They help in conveying the message easily and efficiently to the visitors. Audio recordings can be used to show historical information. Recommendations for Management Tools Increasing the Number of Visitors There is a need to increase the number of people that visit the St. Pauls Catacombs. The average number of visitors in years 2008 and 2009 was 71420. This comes to an average of two hundred people per day. The capacity of the St. Pauls Catacombs is big enough to handle more people. In order to increase the number of visitors, a joint promotion should be undertaken. The most convenient and productive means to use is a joint promotion between different sectors and stakeholders who are involved. The joint promotion is specifically targeting the Malta Tourism Authority and the attraction train (TRAM) that passes through the streets of Rabat. Such promotion will enlighten the potential visitors and thereby the increase the number of visitors is expected. Use of Leaflets and Brochures to Promote Awareness Another important element in promotion is the use of leaflets to increase awareness of the heritage. This is particularly important as it will offer an informative description of the attracti ons that St. Pauls Catacombs have to offer. In the leaflets, pictures can be added to give the potential visitor a vivid image of what to expect. Proper coordination shall also serve as a very important tip on how to reach to St. Pauls Catacombs. Transport Services Transport and mobility within St. Pauls Catacombs is easy and convenient even to people with disabilities. This derives from the fact that the walkways are made in such a way that allows easy and free mobility for people with disabilities as well as normal people. Transport to the place is also not hard to get as there is a train that passes through. Improvement of Security Measures Improvement of security measures is also significant in order to enhance security within the Catacombs. Installation of surveillance cameras as well as hiring more security personnel is a proper way of improving the security status at St. Pauls Catacombs. The modern technology should also be embraced in enhancing security. Increased Involvemen t of the Local People Another recommendation is the increased involvement of the local people. Since Heritage Malta is concerned with the preservation of culture and heritage, support from the local people is important. This calls for educating the locals about the importance of preserving culture. Once the locals feel that their culture is appreciated and is being preserved, they might become interested in volunteering and investing more efforts in preserving own history and culture. This will result in reducing costs to hire people. Offering Ancillary Services Creating other institutions and premises that will offer ancillary services to the clientele at St. Pauls Catacombs is also recommended. For instance, hotels can be set up to offer accommodation for the visitors who have come from very distant locations. Such services as insurance are also important for the heritage attraction. This increases security and confidence in the stability of the heritage attraction. Conclusions Th e Heritage Malta plays a very important role in the preservation of the culture of the people of Malta. The St. Pauls Catacombs are also important attractions, because they have the historical and religious attachments. The challenges include security matters and the increased number of visitors. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the stated recommendations to enhance the achievement of the siteââ¬â¢s intended goals. Effective tools of management are likely to yield fruits if the challenges mentioned in this report are solved. Effective management also includes creating harmonized goals between different stakeholders. This harmonization can be achieved if all the stakeholders communicate with each other and discuss the matters involved. The organization of these meetings and discussion on how to harmonize these goals is normally done by the Malta Tourism Authority. The top reasons HR is important to an organization
The top reasons HR is important to an organization These days, effective businesses take every aspect of their organization seriously and have dedicated professionals across their teams who work towards a common goal- supporting the business and positioning it for lasting success. One important team in the mix is human resources (HR), who often serve ââ¬Å"behind the scenesâ⬠as the backbone of an organization. Their responsibilities are often essential for a business to operate effectively, and theyââ¬â¢re at the front lines of some core business functions- from staffing and recruiting to ensuring that the needs of existing employees are capably met, and more.In fact, according to a recent article by The Balance, ââ¬Å"Aà good HR departmentà is critical to an employee-oriented, productive workplace in which employees are energized and engaged.â⬠Letââ¬â¢s explore some of the key reasons why HR is so important to an organization.Office cultureIn many ways, HR helps set the tone of an officeââ¬â¢s culture, incl uding everything from permissible ways of dressing to setting work hours and workplace processes. HR establishes all of those little things that help define a work environment and shape what an average day on the job is like, which helps cement an employeeââ¬â¢s identification and thoughts on the organization at large, as well as how theyââ¬â¢re perceived from the outside.Staff recruitmentWe all know how important having a top-tier staff is to an organizationââ¬â¢s success, and the HR department is directly responsible for ensuring that the very best available candidates are pursued and recruited for all open positions. They also work to ensure that the reputation of the company they work for is such that it attracts top-level talent in the industry- not an easy feat in todayââ¬â¢s ultra-competitive corporate landscape. According to The Balance, ââ¬Å"HR is responsible for the overall recruiting of a superior workforce. Once again, HR cannot do it alone but must provide support toà hiring managersà who are also responsible for recruiting aà superior workforce. HR must provideà leadership, training, scheduling assistance, aà systematic hiring process,à recruitment planning processes, interview expertise, selection monitoring, and more.â⬠hbspt.cta.load(2785852, '9e52c197-5b5b-45e6-af34-d56403f973c5', {});Employee benefits and perksAll of those things that come alongside an employeeââ¬â¢s salary when theyââ¬â¢re offered a compensation package are likely thanks to the companyââ¬â¢s HR team, all designed to attract the best and brightest crop of employees (and in many companies, HR staff even help to set salary ranges for open positions by providing competitive market analysis). Everything from insurance benefits to vacation time, team building activities, and transportation and education reimbursement- to name just a few- can fall under their purview, and the better they are at their jobs the better theyââ¬â¢ll be able to research, identify, and negotiate great perks to attract talent.Employee issue resolutionIn general, most of us donââ¬â¢t exactly look forward to having difficult or challenging personal issues that require the guidance or intervention of others, but when we do have them and they affect our work, weââ¬â¢re usually grateful that we have the folks in the HR department to turn to. They not only lend their expertise and experience to help deal with whatever the issue is, they can also be real advocates and allies during a difficult situation.Although the roles and responsibilities of HR departments vary across companies and industries, hopefully by now itââ¬â¢s clear that they play a crucial role in most organizationââ¬â¢s operational efficiency, as well as their immediate and long-term successes.
